Furtive green lizard on warming concrete,
lone girl walks between me and my view
of Mediterranean as radio assaults ears
here at this empty beachside cafe.
Carpark empty, stoney beach empty.
Warm breeze sways long uncut grass
and weed that’s gone to seed.
Flat turquoise Med after the storm,
before next storm, has choked on chunks
of the planet, volcanic Etna dust, more
of Africa with every scirocco.
Today waves farewell, it’s a funeral
for a much-loved mafia child.
This sea has seen more than any other
and shrugged off every miscreant
who laid claim. Nature has a heart
and green lizard hears its beat
right through all the babble.
